please do give me some suggestion to this OS - further features, Can I play mp3 and mp4, avi , dat and vob format to play the movies and songs too for entertainment also

hi, I am new to ubuntu. I am currently using Win XP Professional. As I have heard that virus dont affect in linux, Can I start using this OS , Ubuntu. What should I do to install, with the partition level. I am using c: 20gB , d: 10GB, E:10GB and DVD drive , RAM 256mb, processor is 2.40GHz with 40GB hard disk. How should I continue to install it , can I connect to the net with broadband connection using this OS ?
